By the 1880s, however, under the stewardship of Octavius Gass, Vegas became known as the best rest stop all along the westward route, largely due to Gass's understanding of travelers' hospitality needs. In the early 20th century, as railroads began to link US cities, Las Vegas began to grow its own robust economy. Its location in the desert meant that many engineers and construction workers were stationed there while working on big projects in the area, including the erection (heh) of Hoover Dam in the 1930s. As casinos got built into the mix, Las Vegas exploded as a destination for pleasure-seekers of all kinds. Then, in the 40s, the establishment of a gunnery school there in the early days of WWII brought a ton of randy young dudes looking for action to town.
