First Of All -- What?

Well, the evidence does seem to suggest that vegetarians do have less sex than meat eaters, although there does seem to be only a few sources of this data, which is not able to be verified. Stating that 16 % of vegetarians have sex regularly, once a week sex, compared to 42 % of meat eaters managing the same bedroom gymnastics, the data would suggest that one's diet can have an effect on one's sex life. While it has long been held that this is true in principal -- a healthy body leads to healthy sexual habits -- the idea that cutting out meat leads to less sex is a unique new take on things. But is it true? Let's find out...

Is It Even True That Vegetarians Have Less Sex Than Carnivores?

The research states that only 16 % of vegetarians have regular, once a week sex, while 42 % of meat eaters manage to get their ends away at least this often.

One or two points come up quite often in terms of the debate over a vegetarian diet and overall health, and simply put it comes down to protein and iron. Since meat eaters get plenty of both through eating red meat, is there any way to effectively raise your sex drive while not eating meat? There sure is! Aside from taking supplements, which are not generally recommended by health care practitioners, you can increase your protein intake by adding lentils, nuts, soya, as well as fish and dairy (if you are not a vegan). In terms of iron, which is essential to having energy and a healthy blood flow, you can add greens such as broccoli, kale, and spinach to your diet. Some multivitamins can be recommended by your doctor which will also keep your vitamin and mineral intake at healthy levels. You should find that your appetite for sex, as well as your stamina, improves over time, as will your general mood and sense of well-being.

I'm A Meat Eater But I Want To Go Veggie -- Should I Do It?

If you want to see how the greener half lives, here is no reason why you should not try going pescatarian before going fully vegetarian, since this will help ease you off meat while still getting you the animal fats and proteins that you need, as well as omega oils not found in any other food source, and which have been found to be essential for healthy brain development. If you have decided that you want to go veggie for moral reasons, and you do not want to eat any animals, then going pescatarian first can be a good step -- in fact, you may find that this is the right diet for you.

Where Do Ethics Come Into All Of This?

Some people believe that it is morally wrong to kill and eat an animal, but the fact is that this is how our species developed. Whole cultures sprung up around the practices of hunting and feasting on animals -- the hunter gatherers who were our forebears. In modern times, this small scale feeding pattern has been replaced by mass commercial farming of other animals, which has in many circumstances led to less than ethical treatment of animals to say the least. You can begin your own journey to ethical meat eating by choosing only ethically sourced meats, and by buying only free range eggs.

Real Life Stories: How I Beat Meat To Become A Vegetarian

Some people love to eat meat, but many do not. For some, going vegetarian was a choice, while others go veggie because of an event in their lives. Here are a few true life stories from people who saw the (green) light when something happened to change their minds about their diet.

I Was Raised By A Butcher -- But I Don't Eat Meat

"Every day I would come downstairs from the apartment my family owned and see my father at work in the butcher shop. He was always elbow deep in gore, his apron bloodied, a meat cleaver in one hand and the carcass of some poor beast held down in the other. We were expected to follow the same diet back then -- this was before society became more accepting of alternative lifestyles, as vegetarianism would have been called back then -- and so I would consume daily a certain amount of pork, beef, and lamb. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, meat was a part of every meal. But I could never get the image of my father the butcher out of my head, nor the copper tang of blood out of my nostrils, and before long I had developed an eating disorder. I was 16 when I was first hospitalized for anorexia nervosa, but by that time I had already shown a tendency to regurgitate most meals, meaning that I was in fact bulimic. It took a long time for my family to come round to the idea that I could have a separate diet from them, and for a while they tried to support me. However, this was to much for my proud and stubborn father, who before long was insisting that I eat the meat that he made his living preparing and selling. I moved out, eventually, aged 18, and married a young naval officer, who happened to be a Buddhist -- and a vegetarian. I have been a strict vegetarian ever since, and haven't looked back. Now, when my family comes to visit for the holidays (which is infrequent), they are treated to a vegetarian Christmas dinner; my husband and I do not visit them for the holidays, in case you were wondering."

Keeping A Pet Pig Put Me Off Putting Away Pork

"First of all, let me tell you that I have no trouble eating beef, chicken, fish, or any meat other than pork. It is not for religious reasons -- I am not Jewish, or Muslim, or any other faith that excludes pork from their diet. Instead, the reason why I cannot eat pork is that my family used to have a pet pig. Named Applejack, the pig was originally meant to be eaten, and we had bought her as part of our smallholding where we also kept a cow for milking, a whole gabble of chickens, a goat (not sure what we ever used him for, except mowing the lawn), and a llama (again, I'm not sure what the purpose for having a llama was; I never saw him spit once, and I thought that's what they were famous for). In hindsight, you might say that our little farm was more of a petting zoo than an actual functioning farm. At times, it seemed more like an eccentric's menagerie, or a drop off point for the neighborhood's unwanted farm animals, insofar as you could call three sprawling farms in the middle of nowhere a neighborhood. Anyway, the time for killing Applejack came and went, and instead of becoming dinner, she became a member of the family, as so often happens in rural Texas. I guess where we went wrong was giving her a name -- in fact, I still maintain that I only survived because my parents named me. All said, looking after Applejack put me off eating pork for life. Shame really, because I love a nice slice of back bacon with my grits and fried eggs. The lesson here? Never give vegetables pet names, or you won't have anything on your plate at the end of the day."

Working As A Short Order Cook Turned Me Vegan

"You may think that working with food all day would give you an appetite. You'd be wrong, especially if you had ever worked at the kind of scummy diner I worked at as a kid. It was the kind of grease bucket that would get shut down were it still open today, and the boss led off somewhere nice and cool with a neat new pair of bracelets about his sweaty, beastlike wrists. The working space (I hesitate to call it a kitchen) looked like this: Whole tubs full of lukewarm chicken breasts sat marinating in the summer heat that shimmered above the chopping board, while raw lamb lay sunbathing in troughs of Greek dressing in among the methane-exuding receptacles that constituted the salad bar; downstairs in the prep area, slabs of beef noisy with flies crowded the basement "operating" table, where of an evening you may be just as likely to find a snoozing short order cook (not me) as you may food items being made ready for consumption. In summary, the place was a public health liability with fries on the side. Did it make me go vegan? I can honestly say that if anything put me off eating something that once walked, flew, swam, or had anything to do with anything that ever did, it was working at ------ for Mr -------, that summer in -----, New York State. And that was how I ended up turning totally vegan for life."

So Is Lack Of Sex Worth Changing My Diet Over?

Sex, and how frequently you have it, can be a good overall indicator of mood, health, and mental wellbeing. Chances are, if you don't feel like having sex, aren't good at it, or just don't enjoy it when you do get around to it, there may well be something up with you that could be easily fixed through diet and exercise.
